A shooting incident in New York City's Times Square prompted a major police response on Thursday after gunfire broke out in one of the busiest sections of Manhattan, sending pedestrians and tourists rushing for cover.
According to the New York Police Department, officers took a 17-year-old suspect into custody following the incident and recovered a firearm from the scene.
The gunfire occurred near the intersection of West 44th Street and Seventh Avenue, an area that attracts thousands of visitors daily.
Video footage circulating online appeared to show individuals running into the street before shots were fired, triggering panic among bystanders who sought shelter in nearby buildings and businesses.
The city had already deployed thousands of police officers to manage crowds and ensure public safety during related events and festivities.
Despite the disruption, city officials indicated that planned celebrations would continue.
Authorities emphasized that the security presence in Manhattan remained robust and that law enforcement agencies were prepared to respond quickly to incidents occurring during major public gatherings.
