The South Carolina Supreme Court on Wednesday overturned the murder convictions of Alex Murdaugh and ordered a new trial in the 2021 killings of his wife Maggie and son Paul, according to CNN.
In a unanimous 5-0 decision, the court ruled that former county clerk Becky Hill improperly influenced jurors during the high-profile trial. The justices said the court had “no choice” but to reverse the convictions because of Hill’s external influence on the jury.

Murdaugh was convicted in 2023 and sentenced to two life terms after prosecutors argued he killed his wife and son to distract from mounting financial crimes. The report said Murdaugh admitted to stealing millions from clients and lying to investigators, but continued denying the murders.
Murdaugh’s legal team argued Hill’s comments and actions denied him a fair trial. Hill later pleaded guilty to misconduct-related charges tied to the case and received probation.
Prosecutors had argued the evidence against Murdaugh remained overwhelming despite the controversy.
