Pope Leo XIV has issued a major warning about artificial intelligence, arguing that unchecked AI development could weaken truth, damage democracy and reduce human beings to data points, according to a new Vatican document released Monday.
The report said the pope’s 43,000-word encyclical, titled Magnifica Humanitas, compares the global AI race to a modern “Tower of Babel.” Pope Leo argued that AI is not politically or morally neutral because it reflects the values of the governments, corporations and institutions building it.

The Vatican warned that AI could erode human judgment, spread disinformation, deepen economic inequality and normalize artificial relationships that replace genuine human interaction. Pope Leo also criticized the use of AI in warfare, declaring that “no algorithm can make war morally acceptable.”
According to experts quoted by Axios, the document positions the Vatican as a growing moral voice in global AI regulation debates. Scholars said the pope is calling for AI systems that protect human dignity rather than concentrate power in the hands of a few technology giants.
