What The House Funding Bill Means For The Government

The House has approved a short-term funding measure to keep the federal government operating through Dec. 4, reducing the immediate risk of a shutdown ahead of the November midterm elections.

The bill passed by a vote of 220 to 205 and now moves to the Senate for consideration.

House Appropriations Committee Chairman Tom Cole said the temporary extension would provide continuity while lawmakers work through the stalled annual appropriations process.

According to the report, the Senate has yet to advance any of its regular spending bills.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune said he intends to bring the measure up for a vote before the August recess.

The report said he could also consider using the reconciliation process to overcome Democratic opposition and avoid another funding impasse.
