A massive wildfire burning across the Plains has grown rapidly as dangerous weather continues to challenge firefighters, according to CNN. The Ranger Road megafire has scorched more than 283,000 acres in Oklahoma and Kansas, nearly twice the size of Chicago.

The fire began Tuesday in Beaver County, Oklahoma, and spread roughly 60 miles into southern Kansas. Officials said it is about 20 percent contained.

Thousands of residents were evacuated in parts of Kansas and Oklahoma. Authorities confirmed that homes and buildings were destroyed, though no deaths have been reported. At least eight firefighters were injured across both states.

Additional fires forced evacuations in Woodward and Texas County, Oklahoma, and damaged multiple structures. Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt declared a disaster emergency in three counties.

Dry air, gusty winds, and warm winter conditions continue to fuel fire danger across the region.
