CIA Director John Ratcliffe traveled to Moscow this week and warned Russia against attacking NATO territory, CNN reported, citing two people familiar with the trip.
Ratcliffe also urged Moscow to end economic and military support for Iran as the Trump administration seeks to increase pressure on Tehran.
Western intelligence assessments have reportedly identified scenarios ranging from cyberattacks to a small-scale military incursion.
President Donald Trump described Ratcliffe’s trip as largely routine and said he wants the Russia-Ukraine war to end. The Kremlin said Ratcliffe did not meet Putin and that contacts remained primarily between intelligence services.
According to CNN, Washington also asked Ukraine to temporarily halt strikes on Moscow and northern Russian cities ahead of the visit, after informing Kyiv that a senior U.S. official would travel to Russia.
