Nepali officials have made contact with one of the Americans reported missing after devastating flash floods near the Nepal-Tibet border, offering a measure of hope as rescue efforts continue, according to CBS News.
About 85 U.S. nationals remained listed as missing, though authorities have not disclosed the identity, location or condition of the American who was contacted.
The disaster has left more than 4,600 people missing and at least 1,050 dead in Nepal, while Chinese authorities reported 16 deaths and more than 550 missing in Tibet.
Rescuers are also working to reach roughly 600 hydropower workers believed trapped inside mud-filled tunnels. Officials fear dwindling oxygen could threaten survivors.
Nepal’s foreign minister said some missing foreigners may have been stranded in remote mountains without communications but could still be alive.
