A federal whistleblower is warning that the U.S. Postal Service's new system for handling mail ballots could create serious problems ahead of the November midterm elections, according to CBS News.
The disclosure, provided to Democratic Sen. Richard Blumenthal, alleges that the USPS is rushing development of an online portal that will track voters, addresses and unique ballot barcodes.
The whistleblower reportedly described the system as untested and warned that its verification process could cause large numbers of ballots to be delayed or rejected.
Blumenthal has questioned Postmaster General David Steiner and called the rollout potentially unlawful. The controversy follows President Donald Trump's executive order seeking tighter federal controls on mail voting.
CBS News reported that a federal judge recently blocked enforcement of the USPS rule, while the Justice Department appealed. The Supreme Court has also weighed related litigation.
