A 74-year-old Florida death row inmate is scheduled to be executed on Thursday evening, a move that would make him the oldest person put to death in the state's modern history.

Dusty Ray Spencer is set to receive a lethal injection at Florida State Prison for the 1992 fatal stabbing of his wife, Karen.

According to Florida Department of Corrections records, Spencer would surpass the previous oldest inmates executed in the state, both of whom were 72 years old.

Nationally, the oldest person executed in modern U.S. history remains Walter Leroy Moody Jr., who was 83 when Alabama carried out his execution in 2018.

If the execution proceeds, it will be Florida's ninth execution of 2026, following a record 19 executions carried out in 2025.

💡
Governor Ron DeSantis oversaw the highest number of executions in a single year by any Florida governor since capital punishment resumed in 1976.

Another 74-year-old inmate, Dennis Sochor, is also scheduled for execution on July 14 after being convicted in the 1982 murder of a woman he met at a New Year's Eve party.

Florida remains one of the most active states in carrying out death sentences in the United States.
