European space startups are attracting hundreds of millions of dollars as the continent seeks to strengthen its commercial space industry and reduce its reliance on dominant U.S. companies such as SpaceX.
Satellite manufacturer Open Cosmos announced a €300 million ($346 million) funding round Monday. According to CNBC, the oversubscribed raise prioritized European investors and will support satellite infrastructure, connectivity and real-time intelligence.
Europe, however, remains well behind the United States. The OECD reported that U.S.-based companies received 67% of private space investment in 2025, compared with 12.8% for Europe. U.S. public space spending was also roughly five times Europe’s in 2024.
European officials are urging greater investment and coordination as the region tries to close the gap with SpaceX.
