Why Are New York Prosecutors Reopening The Cornell Sexual Assault Case

New York prosecutors are reopening an investigation into an alleged 2024 gang rape involving a former Cornell University student after new allegations emerged in a civil lawsuit, according to CNN.

Tompkins County District Attorney Matthew Van Houten said a grand jury will review the woman’s testimony and additional evidence. He said the allegations in the lawsuit differ substantially from her original police statement, which prosecutors previously determined did not support criminal charges.

Cornell said it conducted a formal Title IX investigation and imposed sanctions, including suspensions and expulsions, while denying claims that students received only essay assignments as punishment.

The woman’s attorney disputes the original investigation and says the alleged assault was nonconsensual. Attorneys for some defendants have denied wrongdoing.

The case has renewed scrutiny of Cornell’s handling of sexual assault allegations.
