OpenAI has signed a major partnership with Visa that will allow AI agents to make payments, purchases and bookings on behalf of users, marking a significant step toward automated online commerce, according to the announcement.

🤝
The deal will integrate Visa's payment infrastructure into OpenAI products, enabling AI agents operating through services such as ChatGPT and the Atlas browser to complete transactions directly.

The report said the partnership is designed to streamline the entire purchasing process, from product selection to payment completion.

Visa emphasized that users will retain control through safeguards such as spending limits, merchant restrictions and approval requirements. The company will also use tokenized payment credentials to protect card information and enhance security.

🔒
According to Visa executives, the goal is to ensure AI-driven transactions remain secure, transparent and user-controlled.

The agreement positions OpenAI at the forefront of emerging "agentic commerce," though similar support from other AI firms and payment networks may be needed before the technology becomes widely adopted.
