Chinese authorities have confirmed the detention of U.S. citizen U Min Zin, a political analyst and founder of the Institute for Strategy and Policy Myanmar (ISP-M), on allegations of espionage and activities that allegedly endangered China's national security.

According to Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian, authorities have imposed criminal measures against U Min Zin, though officials have not disclosed specific details about the accusations.

The think tank he leads focuses on political, security and conflict developments in Myanmar, including analysis of China's influence along the China-Myanmar border.

AFP reported that U Min Zin was arrested on June 3 at Kunming Airport in China's Yunnan province while reportedly traveling to attend a meeting. Sources familiar with the matter said his family and colleagues are coordinating with U.S. consular officials.

The U.S. State Department acknowledged reports of the detention and said it would provide appropriate consular assistance. Chinese officials emphasized that all foreigners in China must comply with Chinese law.

The arrest comes weeks after President Donald Trump met Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing, where both sides publicly highlighted improving ties.
