President Donald Trump fired Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem on Thursday after consulting advisers who said her leadership had become a political liability, according to Axios. The dismissal marks the most significant personnel shake up of Trump’s second term.
Noem faced intense scrutiny following contentious appearances before House and Senate committees. Lawmakers from both parties questioned her management of the Department of Homeland Security and raised concerns about expensive spending decisions.

One controversy involved the purchase of two Gulfstream jets and the leasing of a Boeing Business Jet valued at more than $270 million. Critics said the aircraft included luxury features unsuitable for immigration enforcement operations.
Noem also faced criticism for her handling of an immigration operation in Minneapolis that ended in the fatal shooting of two U.S. citizens.
The White House quickly moved to stabilize the department. Trump tapped Oklahoma Senator Markwayne Mullin to replace Noem as Homeland Security secretary, Axios reported.
