Why Did UK And Norway Track Russian Submarines?

The United Kingdom and Norway carried out a weeks-long military operation to monitor and deter Russian submarines near critical infrastructure in the North Atlantic, according to the Associated Press.

The report said British forces deployed a frigate, aircraft and personnel to track a Russian attack submarine and two intelligence-gathering vessels.

UK Defense Secretary John Healey said the submarines were operating near undersea cables and pipelines, warning that any attempt to damage such assets would face serious consequences. The Russian vessels withdrew following sustained monitoring.

British officials emphasized that Russia remains a primary security threat, even as global attention shifts to the Middle East. Healey said Moscow may seek to exploit distractions, but the UK will remain vigilant.

The report added that the UK is also prepared to take stronger action against Russia’s so-called shadow fleet, which is accused of evading sanctions tied to the Ukraine war. Officials signaled readiness to intercept suspect vessels if necessary.
