Federal authorities are investigating whether Iranian hackers were behind a cyberattack that disrupted water utility systems in at least seven states, including Minnesota, according to CBS News.
The report said the attacks targeted internet-connected industrial control systems used to monitor and operate water and wastewater facilities.
According to CBS News, investigators have not formally attributed the attacks to Iran and are also examining whether another actor may have attempted to disguise its identity.
The FBI, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, and the Environmental Protection Agency have warned that hackers are increasingly targeting programmable logic controllers used in critical infrastructure.
The report said federal agencies urged utilities to disconnect publicly exposed operational technology from the internet and strengthen cybersecurity safeguards as the investigation continues.
