Todd Blanche's nomination to serve as President Donald Trump's attorney general faces growing uncertainty after Sen. John Cornyn said he is not prepared to support the nomination without written assurances that the Justice Department will permanently abandon a proposed $1.8 billion "anti-weaponization" fund, according to CNN.
Sen. Thom Tillis has also raised concerns, although he expressed confidence that an agreement could still be reached.
According to CNN, the Justice Department said it had submitted a written proposal to Cornyn's office, but the Texas Republican insisted it did not address his requests. Blanche declined to answer reporters' questions as negotiations continued.
The report said the disputed fund was intended to compensate people who claimed they had been unfairly targeted by the Justice Department, including potentially some January 6 defendants. Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley is expected to decide whether Thursday's vote will proceed.
