Former top U.S. infectious disease official Dr. Anthony Fauci continued to invoke his Fifth Amendment right throughout a Senate Homeland Security Committee hearing, refusing to answer every question from lawmakers, according to CBS News.

The report said Chairman Sen. Rand Paul questioned Fauci about gain-of-function research, COVID-19 vaccines, the pandemic response and the presidential pardon issued by former President Joe Biden.

Fauci, acting on advice from his attorneys, declined to respond to each question by invoking his constitutional right against self-incrimination.

According to CBS News, Paul said he had hoped Fauci would acknowledge mistakes made during the pandemic or offer an apology, but expressed disappointment after receiving no substantive answers.

Democratic members of the committee criticized Paul's handling of the hearing, while Republicans continued to press Fauci over the origins of COVID-19 and other pandemic-related issues.

The report said Sen. James Lankford recognized Fauci's constitutional right to invoke the Fifth Amendment but said significant questions about the pandemic and its long-term impact remain unresolved.
