President Donald Trump has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn the Rs. 83.3 million defamation judgment awarded to columnist E. Jean Carroll, arguing that comments he made in 2019 were protected as official presidential acts.
According to court filings, Trump's legal team contends the statements fell within the scope of his duties as president and should therefore be shielded by presidential immunity.
An appeals court previously rejected that argument, describing the damages award as reasonable given the facts of the case.
Carroll's attorneys dispute those claims and maintain the judgment remains enforceable.
The Supreme Court is now considering this appeal alongside a separate challenge by Trump to another Carroll verdict worth Rs. 5 million.
