Why Is Violent Crime Falling So Quickly Across America

Violent crime in the US is falling at an historic pace, but researchers remain divided over what is driving the decline. According to Axios, violent crime dropped 9.7% in 2025, while the murder rate fell 18.5% to 4.1 per 100,000 people.

AI tools, drones and license plate readers are increasingly helping police identify suspects and target crime hotspots.

Some researchers also cite expanded youth employment, mental health services and community violence programs. The Trump administration has credited National Guard deployments and tougher prosecutions in some cities, but experts told Axios there is limited evidence these measures explain the nationwide decline.

The report said the outlook remains uncertain. Federal funding for local crime-fighting programs expires at year-end, while an economic downturn could potentially reverse recent gains.
