The U.S. violent crime fell 9.7% in 2025, marking the largest annual decline recorded in the FBI’s national estimates since 1936, according to FBI data reviewed by Axios.
Property crime also declined 12.4%, with motor vehicle theft falling 22.7% and burglary dropping 15.8%.
Axios reported that the decline extended across large cities, smaller communities, suburbs and rural areas. More than 17,000 law enforcement agencies provided 2025 data, covering over 96% of the U.S. population.
The report does not establish a single cause. The decline began in 2022 and continued through both the Biden administration and President Donald Trump’s second term.
