International leaders have begun responding to the Democratic Party's projected victories in the US House and Senate, a political shift expected to influence Washington's approach to trade, security and energy policy.
German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius congratulated Democrats on what he described as an historic victory, while South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said the outcome could introduce a new era in international relations.
President Donald Trump accepted the election outcome but warned he would veto legislation he considers unreasonable when the new Congress takes office in January.
Meanwhile, preparations continue for US-mediated Ukraine-Russia talks scheduled in Abu Dhabi on November 10 and 11, following discussions in Brussels on security guarantees.
