Authorities in Wuhan and two Chinese state-backed institutions have filed a $50 billion lawsuit against the US state of Missouri, escalating a long-running legal battle over responsibility for the Covid-19 pandemic, according to court documents cited by multiple media outlets.

The suit, filed in a Wuhan court, names Missouri, its governor, and two former state attorneys general.

The plaintiffs accuse Missouri officials of politicizing Covid-19, damaging China’s reputation, and causing economic harm through earlier US litigation.

The move follows a March ruling by a US federal judge who found China responsible for concealing the early outbreak and hoarding protective equipment.

The court awarded Missouri more than $24 billion in damages. Missouri officials have vowed to seize Chinese-owned assets to enforce the judgment.

China rejects the US ruling and calls it politically motivated. Missouri officials dismissed the Chinese lawsuit as baseless and said they will not comply with any foreign judgment.

The legal clash comes as Washington and Beijing attempt to stabilize relations under President Donald Trump.
