Xi Jinping Likely To Visit India For First Time In Seven Years

Chinese President Xi Jinping is likely to attend next month's BRICS summit in New Delhi, potentially making his first visit to India in seven years, according to three sources.

China is reportedly preparing a delegation of about 400 officials, significantly larger than the delegation it sent in 2019.

Relations between the two countries deteriorated after deadly border clashes in 2020, which killed 20 Indian and four Chinese soldiers and led to a prolonged military standoff. The two sides reached a disengagement agreement in October 2024.

India and China remain strategic competitors, but changing U.S. trade policies have created incentives for both countries to strengthen cooperation through BRICS.

India's National Security Adviser Ajit Doval is currently in Beijing for talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, including discussions on the disputed boundary.

China has confirmed its strong interest in BRICS cooperation but has not officially confirmed Xi's travel plans or agenda.
