Trump Acknowledges Putin Started The War In Ukraine

A Ukrainian rescuer takes a break at the site of a missile attack in Sumy, northeastern Ukraine, on April 13, 2025, amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has invited U.S. President Donald Trump to visit Ukraine before proposing any peace deal with Russia. Speaking to CBS’s 60 Minutes, Zelensky urged Trump to witness the human toll firsthand — "civilians, warriors, hospitals, churches, children destroyed or dead" — before engaging in negotiations.

The interview was recorded before a Russian missile strike on Sumy killed 34 and injured 117. Russia claimed it only targeted military sites, but international leaders condemned the attack.

In response, Trump took to Truth Social, distancing himself from the conflict: “The war between Russia and Ukraine is Biden’s war, not mine... I had nothing to do with this war,” he wrote. He criticized both former U.S. President Biden and Zelensky, but said he is working to “get the death and destruction to stop.”
