A 17-year-old girl has been charged with three counts of first-degree murder over her alleged role in a deadly shooting at a San Diego mosque, authorities announced Monday.
Sarah Lindsey Santiago is accused of planning to livestream the May 18 attack and distribute a white-supremacist manifesto associated with the gunmen. Prosecutors allege the document cited the 2019 Christchurch mosque shootings, which killed 51 people, as an inspiration.
Abdullah's response reportedly helped prevent an even greater loss of life. He exchanged gunfire with the attackers and initiated a lockdown, protecting about 140 children who were inside the facility.
Santiago, who was arrested last week, also faces a conspiracy charge. The case highlights how individuals who do not directly participate in an attack can potentially face serious criminal charges for allegedly planning, facilitating or promoting extremist violence.
The prosecution is unfolding in North Carolina, where authorities will now have to establish the extent of Santiago's involvement and her alleged intent.
