Autopsy Says Tennessee National Guard Shot Armed Man In The Back

A 20-year-old armed man fatally shot by Tennessee National Guard members in Memphis was struck in the back, according to an autopsy report that appears to contradict earlier police accounts.

Tyrin Johnson was shot July 5 while National Guard troops were assigned to the Memphis Safe Task Force, a federal initiative created under President Donald Trump to deploy troops in cities facing high crime.

The Shelby County Medical Examiner found that the bullet entered Johnson's back and traveled upward. The absence of a muzzle imprint indicated the shot was fired from more than three feet away.

Police had previously said Johnson was facing the troops when they opened fire. The new findings have prompted questions about what happened during the encounter.

State Sen. Raumesh Akbari called for an explanation, saying the autopsy presented a different account from what the public had initially been told. Johnson's family is seeking surveillance footage that could clarify the shooting.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation continues to investigate, while prosecutors are awaiting the final findings before deciding whether charges should be filed.
