Investment firm Brookfield plans to develop an artificial intelligence data centre at the Drax Power Station estate in North Yorkshire, with total investment potentially exceeding £20 billion ($26.8 billion).

The project, being developed alongside Drax Group and Brookfield's Radiant platform, will initially provide 100 megawatts of capacity from early 2028. A further 500 MW is planned between 2028 and 2031, with a longer-term target exceeding 1 gigawatt.

The first phase requires regulatory approvals, grid connections and a confirmed customer before construction proceeds. Brookfield expects to invest £2.5 billion initially.

The announcement comes as Britain seeks to strengthen its AI infrastructure amid high energy costs and delays in connecting data centres to the electricity grid. Europe has lagged behind the US in developing large-scale facilities.

Meanwhile, Finland has attracted major commitments, including Google's planned €13 billion investment in AI infrastructure, highlighting growing competition for computing capacity across the continent.
