ABC has launched a nationwide on-air campaign encouraging viewers to participate in ongoing Federal Communications Commission proceedings involving the network, intensifying a public dispute between one of the country's largest broadcasters and federal regulators.

The campaign directs viewers to submit comments to the FCC regarding investigations tied to the daytime talk show The View and the renewal of several ABC-affiliated broadcast licenses.

Promotional segments airing across the network feature archival footage of ABC founder Barbara Walters and provide viewers with information about how to engage in the public comment process before upcoming deadlines.

The regulatory actions stem from reviews initiated under FCC Chairman Brendan Carr. The inquiries reportedly involve questions surrounding Disney's diversity, equity, and inclusion policies as well as whether appearances by political candidates on The View complied with federal broadcasting rules. The reviews also include consideration of license renewals for several ABC-owned stations.

ABC has strongly criticized the proceedings, describing them as unprecedented and arguing that they raise concerns about press freedom and First Amendment protections.

Network executives contend that the investigations represent an unusual level of regulatory scrutiny directed at a major media organization and have sought to rally public support through the newly launched awareness campaign.

💡
Federal regulators have rejected those claims. An FCC spokesperson characterized ABC's outreach effort as misleading and argued that the agency is carrying out its statutory responsibilities under established legal procedures.

The commission maintains that public participation is a normal part of the regulatory process and that investigations are being conducted in accordance with federal law.

The dispute unfolds amid broader tensions between the Trump administration and several major media organizations. Debates over media regulation, broadcast licensing, and political content have become increasingly prominent as policymakers and broadcasters clash over the scope of government oversight and constitutional protections for news and entertainment programming.
