An erroneous AI analysis of a Chinese vessel’s cargo nearly triggered a military confrontation between the United States and China this spring, according to CNN.

A Special Operations Command Pacific analyst reportedly asked an AI chatbot to examine the ship’s manifest, but the system incorrectly combined publicly available information with classified signals intelligence and concluded that the vessel was carrying components linked to a Chinese nuclear weapons program.

The episode has raised concerns about the rapid adoption of AI for military intelligence and targeting. Critics say the Pentagon lacks sufficient standards to prevent AI hallucinations from contributing to civilian casualties or friendly-fire incidents.

Military officials nevertheless argue that the United States must accelerate AI adoption to remain competitive with China. The debate comes amid broader cybersecurity concerns, including warnings that increased AI deployment has contributed to vulnerabilities across Pentagon networks.
