Corporate leaders are taking a more cautious approach to discussing artificial intelligence and layoffs as public anxiety over AI-driven job losses grows, according to Axios.

Executives once openly highlighted how AI could reduce staffing and boost efficiency. Klarna, Salesforce and Coinbase previously pointed to AI as a way to operate with fewer employees or smaller teams.

That messaging is becoming more difficult as workers and the public grow more concerned about employment. According to a CBS News and YouGov poll, 61% of U.S. adults expect AI to reduce economic opportunities. A separate Pew survey found even stronger concern among younger Americans.

AI was cited as the leading reason for U.S. job cuts in July for the fifth straight month, according to Challenger, Gray & Christmas. Employers have attributed nearly 113,000 announced cuts this year to AI.

The report said companies including Etsy, Patreon and Microsoft are now stressing that recent layoffs were not directly caused by AI, while acknowledging that the technology is changing workplace skills and operations.

Experts say companies should communicate AI-driven changes early, avoid celebrating layoffs as an AI success and maintain a consistent explanation for employees and investors.
