Air Force Secretary Confirms New U.S. Weapons In Space

The United States has deployed weapons in space and says they can be used to defend American forces, marking the first public acknowledgment of such capabilities, according to CNN.

The announcement comes as U.S. officials warn that China and Russia are developing increasingly sophisticated military and counterspace systems. Washington has also accused Russia of exploring potentially destructive space-based weapons.

President Donald Trump has made strengthening U.S. space capabilities a major defense priority since creating the Space Force in 2019. His administration is also pursuing the proposed Golden Dome missile defense system.

The 1967 Outer Space Treaty prohibits nuclear weapons and weapons of mass destruction in orbit but does not broadly ban conventional weapons in space.

Meink said a U.S. space-based interceptor program has progressed to flight-ready hardware in less than a year.
