An American Airlines flight from Madrid to Dallas-Fort Worth diverted to New York’s JFK International Airport on Tuesday after six of the Boeing 777’s eight lavatories stopped working during the 10-hour transatlantic journey.
Flight 37 was carrying 287 passengers when the pilot declared “pan-pan,” an international signal for an urgent situation requiring attention. The pilot told air traffic control that only two lavatories remained operational, prompting the diversion.
The aircraft landed safely at JFK and remained there for more than three hours before continuing to Dallas-Fort Worth, according to FlightAware data.
The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that the diversion resulted from an “inadequate number of operational lavatories.”
