Authorities Regain Partial Control After Jail Uprising

Authorities in North Carolina are working to restore full control of the Bertie-Martin Regional Detention Center after inmates overpowered correctional officers and briefly seized sections of the facility during an early morning disturbance on Monday.

According to officials, the incident began around 5 a.m. when 88 inmates assaulted the three correctional officers on duty. One officer managed to escape shortly after the confrontation began, while the remaining two were taken hostage.

Law enforcement agencies, including the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation and the FBI, responded by establishing a secure perimeter around the detention center and initiating negotiations.

By approximately 9:30 a.m., authorities had secured the safe release of the two hostages along with 18 inmates.

Bertie County Sheriff Tyrone Ruffin confirmed that all three correctional officers were safe and receiving medical treatment, emphasizing that protecting staff, inmates and the surrounding community remained the highest priority.

Officials said roughly 80 inmates had been removed from the facility, with an estimated 10 individuals still inside as negotiations continued.

Authorities are seeking a peaceful resolution while investigators work to determine how the incident unfolded.
