Avianca Flight Diverts To Miami After Severe Turbulence Injures Eight

An Avianca flight traveling from Medellin, Colombia, to New York diverted to Miami International Airport early Friday after severe turbulence injured passengers. Eight people were taken to local hospitals following the aircraft’s landing at about 3:30 a.m.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue transported the injured passengers to Jackson Memorial Hospital and Ryder Trauma Center for treatment. Witnesses reported seeing passengers wearing neck braces and receiving medical attention, although officials have not released details about their conditions.

Passenger Maria Paula Jimenez told CBS News Miami that the situation was unusual, while another passenger told NBC6 that the experience made them appreciate life.

The aircraft, operating as Avianca Flight 042, had been scheduled to arrive at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport. The diversion prompted authorities to examine the incident.
