A 20-year-old archery hunter was injured in a bear attack Monday while wading across a creek on state land near Elk Creek, south of Augusta, Montana, according to Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks.
The injuries were not considered life-threatening.
He then walked about three miles to his vehicle and drove roughly 25 miles to Simms, where he met his father before being taken to Benefis Hospital in Great Falls.
Montana wildlife officials are investigating the incident and have deployed three game wardens to survey the surrounding Elk Park area. The species of bear involved has not been identified.
Authorities are reminding people in bear country to carry bear spray, keep meat away from campsites and avoid processing animal carcasses around dusk.
