Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders has endorsed Zohran Mamdani in the Democratic primary for New York City mayor, giving a major boost to the democratic campaign.
Mamdani, 33, is challenging former governor Andrew Cuomo, 67, who is attempting a political comeback following his resignation over sexual harassment allegations.
At this dangerous moment in history, status quo politics isn’t good enough.

We need new leadership that is prepared to stand up to powerful corporate interests & fight for the working class. @ZohranKMamdani is providing that vision. He is the best choice for NYC mayor. https://t.co/8QiYGvTUMj
While Cuomo started as the frontrunner, Mamdani has gained ground, securing Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s backing and leading in at least one poll.
“At this dangerous moment in history, status quo politics isn’t good enough,” Sanders posted. “We need new leadership… to fight for the working class.”
Mamdani called Sanders “the single most influential political figure” in his life and pledged to uphold his legacy.
Early voting began June 14 ahead of the June 24 primary, which will use ranked-choice voting. Current Mayor Eric Adams is running as an independent in the November 4 general election and faces criticism for his ties to President Trump.
