Silicon Valley’s record spending to influence the 2026 US elections failed to deliver the expected Republican victories, with Democrats making significant gains and preparing to scrutinise major technology companies.

Several Democratic candidates campaigned against billionaire influence in politics.

In Texas, James Talarico defeated Ken Paxton despite more than $200 million reportedly spent by SpaceX CEO Elon Musk to oppose him. Gina Hinojosa also defeated Governor Greg Abbott, criticising his support for expanding data centres at the expense of local communities.

In North Carolina, Cooper similarly argued that ordinary voters should take precedence over wealthy donors and political insiders.

A CNBC analysis of Federal Election Commission records found that 14 of the 20 largest donor groups backed Republicans exclusively or predominantly. Cryptocurrency, artificial intelligence and online gambling interests contributed more than $377 million to election campaigns.

Meanwhile, Democratic donor Reid Hoffman called the results a rejection of President Donald Trump and his allies.
