Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, 70, has been put under house arrest, accused of conspiracy to overturn his 2022 electoral loss – a move that ratchets up tensions with U.S. President Trump.

Bolsonaro is charged with conspiracy to violently overturn his 2022 electoral loss to President Lula da Silva.

President Trump refers to the case as a “witch hunt” – echoing his own attempts to refute his election loss in 2021 – using it as grounds for applying a 50% tariff on Brazilian goods.
