California’s primary election is shaping up as a critical test for both state politics and the battle for control of Congress.

Polls show former Biden cabinet secretary Xavier Becerra leading the race to succeed termed-out Governor Gavin Newsom, with Democratic billionaire Tom Steyer and Republican television personality Steve Hilton among the leading contenders seeking a place in the November general election.

The contest is being closely watched because it coincides with California’s newly redrawn congressional map, which could influence the balance of power in the U.S. House.

According to a report in Reuters, Democrats hope the revised districts will offset Republican gains sought through redistricting efforts in Texas.

Recent polling suggests Democrats may secure both spots in the general election under California’s jungle primary system, a scenario that has never occurred in a gubernatorial race since the system was adopted.

Political analysts say Becerra’s government experience and record as California attorney general have strengthened his standing among Democratic voters.

Meanwhile, Steyer has remained competitive after investing about $200 million of his own money into the campaign and promoting a progressive agenda that includes higher taxes on billionaires.
