Canada Hits US Goods With Retaliatory Tariffs As Trade Tensions Escalate

Canada has announced retaliatory tariffs of up to 50% on a range of U.S. goods, escalating the trade dispute between the two countries.

The measures target products including steel, dairy, electronics and motorcycles and broadly match the tariff levels imposed by Washington.

President Donald Trump raised tariffs on Canadian products to 50% on August 22 after trade negotiations broke down, with the White House accusing Canada of unfair treatment of American goods.

Trump has since threatened to double tariffs on Canadian automobiles next year and referred to Canada as the “51st state,” signalling further escalation.

The dispute is also putting pressure on the future of the USMCA trade agreement, while disagreements over issues including Quebec's cultural protections continue to complicate negotiations.
