Canada’s newly elected Prime Minister Mark Carney used his election night victory speech to deliver a forceful rebuke to U.S. President Donald Trump, vowing that Canada would never become America’s “51st state.”
“President Trump is trying to break us so America can own us. That will never, ever happen,” Carney declared, following a narrow Liberal win over Pierre Poilievre’s Conservatives. Carney condemned what he called “the American betrayal,” warning that the U.S.-anchored trade system is over. He pledged a pivot toward global partnerships, energy independence, and a robust industrial strategy: “It’s time to build, baby, build.”
Poilievre, who mirrored Trump’s populist tone, conceded defeat, promising to hold the government accountable.
