Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has rejected President Donald Trump's decision to rename Lake Ontario as “Lake America,” insisting that Canada will continue using its traditional name.
Trump signed an executive order Thursday directing the U.S. Interior Department to update federal geographic records within 30 days. The move comes as Washington and Ottawa remain locked in a trade dispute involving about $20 billion in reciprocal tariffs.
Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston also dismissed Trump's move as “real foolishness.”
The U.S. order applies to federal agencies and does not have authority over Canadian institutions or citizens. As a result, the lake could effectively have different official names in the two countries.
Trump has also hinted at possible future changes to the names of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, suggesting his geographic renaming campaign could expand further.
