President Donald Trump has signed an executive order directing U.S. federal agencies to refer to Lake Ontario as “Lake America” in official documents and records.
The move comes amid continuing tensions between Washington and Ottawa over trade. It follows Trump's earlier effort to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America,” continuing his push to alter geographic names through federal action.
Lake Ontario is shared by the United States and Canada, making the directive largely symbolic outside the U.S. government. Canadian authorities have not been required to change their official terminology.
The decision adds another point of friction to already strained U.S.-Canada relations and reflects Trump's broader use of geographic renaming as a political tool.
