Canada’s Liberal Party has found Justin Trudeau’s replacement in former career banker Mark Carney. Carney, who will soon be sworn in as Prime Minister, is the Liberal Party’s great, bland, hope — an amnesia pill for Canadians dissatisfied with failson Trudeau’s embarrassing and catastrophic nine-year Prime Ministry. This, despite Carney’s apparent affinity for Trudeau and Trudeau’s far-left policies.
Legacy media outlets jumped on an Ipsos poll claiming a 2-point lead for the Liberal Party over the rival Conservative Party. The Liberals are “resurgent,” a Canadian academic says.
But is that true?
The CBC Poll Tracker, which averages every publicly available poll, still puts Carney nearly 10 points behind Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre. Certainly, Carney makes a fitter foe than Trudeau. So would a soggy, egg-battered slice of bread drowned in maple syrup.
Carney is expected to face off against Poilievre in a snap election for Prime Minister concerning a central theme: Donald Trump.
“Canada never, ever, will be part of America in any way, shape or form,” Carney declared in his acceptance speech.
He’s almost correct. Canada will never be America, just a culturally irrelevant satellite state orbiting America.
A sampling of Canadian headlines indicates their perspectival yoke to the United States: “Dealing with Trump, Poilievre sounds like yesterday’s man,” “Liberals mount a comeback amid Trump threats,” etc.
For a country that definitely has its own identity, they could definitely stand to show it.
“Donald Trump thinks he can weaken us with his plan to divide and conquer,” warned Carney. “Pierre Poilievre’s plan will leave us divided and ready to be conquered.”
Poilievre responded to Carney’s win by criticizing the Prime-Minister-To-Be’s economic record: “He’s just like Justin…we have the same liberal MPs, the same liberal advisors, the same liberal promises who will produce the same liberal results, doubling housing costs, doubling the debt, doubling lineups at food banks, enriching the global elites at the expense of the working class and making our economy more helpless and reliant on the Americans than ever before.”
Not yet convinced of Carney’s leadership ability? How about an inscrutably long and tiny-texted meme?
For all our national differences, it is heartening to confirm the left’s cross-cultural inability to meme.
Other points of critique, sourced from a list of “7 Reasons To Be Afraid” of the politician, include: Poilievre’s desire to make Canada “the freest country in the world,” his opposition to vaccines mandates, his lack of white guilt, and his intent to repeal the Carbon Tax.
A good start. But one more moment merits inclusion: Poilievre’s masterful dismantling of a leftie journo’s narrative, executed while calmly crunching an apple:
