CDC Ends Lettuce-Linked Cyclosporiasis Outbreak Investigation

Federal data through Sept. 8 recorded 19,595 total cyclosporiasis cases across 49 states and Washington, D.C., including 1,043 hospitalizations and two deaths.

The CDC has declared the United States’ largest recorded cyclosporiasis outbreak over, reporting 12,883 laboratory-confirmed cases across 21 states since May 1.

Officials linked the illnesses to contaminated iceberg lettuce grown by Taylor Farms in Mexico and said the affected lettuce is no longer available at stores or restaurants.

However, a six-week delay in federal case verification means additional cases may continue to be added to the CDC’s totals even after the outbreak’s official conclusion.

The FDA continues investigating other outbreaks involving parasitic illnesses, highlighting ongoing challenges in detecting and responding to foodborne contamination events nationwide.
