Federal Officials Prepare To End Major Cyclospora Outbreak

Federal health officials are preparing to declare an end to the summer’s major cyclospora outbreak linked to iceberg lettuce, according to The Washington Post and CNN.

The outbreak affected 20 states and sickened at least 11,458 people, with 495 hospitalizations and two deaths reported through August 27, according to the FDA and CDC. It became the largest recorded cyclospora outbreak in the United States, with Michigan among the hardest-hit states.

Investigators traced illnesses to shredded iceberg lettuce associated with meals at some Taco Bell locations. The FDA linked the product to Taylor Farms and growers in Mexico. A recall followed in July, and the FDA said the recalled lettuce should no longer be available.

The report said the Taylor Farms facility in Mexico remains closed. Health officials are allowing time for delayed cases to emerge because cyclospora symptoms and outbreak investigations can take weeks.

Experts said the immediate consumer risk appears to have passed, provided no new illnesses are detected.
