Vaccination coverage among U.S. kindergartners declined slightly during the 2025-2026 school year, while exemptions from one or more vaccines increased, according to the CDC.

Coverage fell by 0.1 percentage point, while the share of children with at least one exemption rose to 4.2 percent.

The report said about 280,000 kindergartners attended school without documented MMR vaccination.

MMR and DTaP coverage ranged between 92 percent and 92.4 percent, below the CDC's recommended 95 percent level needed to help prevent outbreaks.

💡
The decline comes as the United States has recorded 2,566 confirmed measles cases this year, the highest annual total in more than three decades. Vaccine exemptions exceeded 5 percent in 24 areas, compared with 3.6 percent previously.

The CDC's data highlights growing concerns over declining childhood immunisation coverage and the potential for increased transmission of highly contagious diseases such as measles.
