According to Chinese state media, Xi told Kim that China’s commitment to its longstanding partnership with North Korea would not change regardless of shifts in the international environment.

He called for deeper cooperation in foreign policy, security, law enforcement and military affairs while emphasizing the need to protect the two nations’ sovereignty and strategic interests.

Kim described Xi as a distinguished guest and praised the China-North Korea relationship as a top strategic priority. The two leaders also agreed to expand cooperation in trade, infrastructure, technology and cultural exchanges.

Analysts told the publication that Beijing is seeking to strengthen its influence over Pyongyang as North Korea has drawn closer to Russia in recent years.

The visit comes amid growing geopolitical competition involving China, Russia and the United States, as well as continuing concerns over North Korea’s expanding nuclear weapons program.
