Chinese President Xi Jinping reaffirmed Beijing’s “unwavering” support for North Korea and leader Kim Jong-un during a two-day state visit to Pyongyang, his first trip abroad this year and his first visit to the country since 2019.
He called for deeper cooperation in foreign policy, security, law enforcement and military affairs while emphasizing the need to protect the two nations’ sovereignty and strategic interests.
Analysts told the publication that Beijing is seeking to strengthen its influence over Pyongyang as North Korea has drawn closer to Russia in recent years.
The visit comes amid growing geopolitical competition involving China, Russia and the United States, as well as continuing concerns over North Korea’s expanding nuclear weapons program.
