A devastating fire swept through the neonatal care unit of a major government hospital early Wednesday morning, killing at least 14 newborn babies.
The blaze erupted around 6:45 a.m. local time on the third floor of the Mother and Child Health Ward at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS). Preliminary reports indicate the fire was triggered by a electrical short circuit or an exploding air conditioner unit compressor inside the crowded nursery.
Thick smoke quickly filled the ward, trapping the infants before emergency teams could fully intervene. Out of 15 newborns present in the facility at the time, only one baby was successfully rescued. Grieving parents and relatives gathered outside the building, demanding accountability over hospital safety infrastructure.
